EVENT AWARDS
In all events, medals
will be awarded to first through eighth places. The Point score for
Individual Events are 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for first through eighth places.
Relay Events receive double the individual point score award,
TEAM HIGH
POINT AWARDS
There are high point trophies for first, second
and third place teams for combined
team score. Trophies will also be awarded to first, second and third place high
scoring teams in both boys' and girls' divisions.
DONALD C.
McGEACHIN FOUNDERS TROPHY
One of the founders of the Westchester County Swimming Association, he was
the Treasurer from 1929 until his death and the Clerk of Course for many years
also. For Donald McGeachin, the most important aspect of the Association was the
participation and enjoyment of the children. This trophy is presented to the
member club scoring the highest combined swimming and diving points at the
championships.
WILLIAM H.
SMITH MEMORIAL TROPHY
A resident of Larchmont, William H. Smith was one of the Association's great
swimmers. While at the peak of his competitive career and while serving in the
Armed Forces in Europe, he was killed in action. The boys' team high point
winner is the recipient of this award.
EDWARD J.
MARKEY MEMORIAL TROPHY
A resident of New Rochelle, Edward J. Markey served for many years as an
officer of the Association and gave generously of his time and energy to further
organized swimming in the county. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1948.
The girls' team high point winner is the recipient of the Edward J. Markey
Memorial Trophy.
STEPHEN E.
JOHNSTON AWARD
The runner up trophy in the Boys Division is named after the former coach
Steve Johnston, of Harbor Island. He spent over 50 years guiding the youth of
the Village of Mamaroneck, and surrounding communities. In 1976, the Village of
Mamaroneck dedicated the Beach Pavilion, at Harbor Island, in his honor.
Johnston was active in local politics and as a member of the Senior Citizens Pop
Band until his death in 1990.
DAVE & TERRY
HELLER AWARD
The runner up trophy in the Girls Division is awarded in honor of Dave and
Terry Heller of Rye. Dave Heller has served as Vice President and Treasurer for
the WCSA and as Head Timer, Referee, and Official since the 1980s. Terry Heller
has been a fixture as one of our volunteer timers. The Heller's five children
have all competed at the championships and they are looking forward to the day
when their grandchildren can continue the family swimming tradition.
LEO J. BUTLER
DIVING TROPHY
Awarded annually to the team with the highest combined score for all four
diving events. This trophy is given in honor of Leo J. Butler. His guidance has
been invaluable throughout his long service to the Association as Vice President
and Chairman of Officials. Mr. Butler continues to referee the diving portion of
our county championships.
JACK RYAN
RELAY TROPHY
This trophy is awarded annually to the team with the highest combined point
score for all eight relay events. This trophy is given in honor of Jack Ryan,
former coach of the Orienta Beach Club and of the United States Military Academy
at West Point.
INDIVIDUAL
HIGH POINT AWARDS
Trophies for first and
second place
will be awarded to the top two competitors in each age group in both
boys' and girls' divisions. It is possible for a contestant to score in four
individual events only, including diving, for a maximum of 36 points. Open to
all contestants.
AL & DOT
BUNCHER TROPHY
Awarded each year to the boys achieving the highest individual point score
(a maximum of 36 points). This trophy is given in honor of two of our longtime
officials who gave much of their time to the youth of the County of Westchester
and the WCSA. Dorothy Buncher passed away in 1979 and Al in 1986.
ABBE LAHEY
MEMORIAL TROPHY
Awarded each year to the girls achieving the highest individual point
score (a maximum of 36 points). This trophy is given in honor of the late Abbe
Lahey, who was associated with the Westchester Country Club, where she was
active for many years.
RELAY AWARDS
JOHN J.
ARCHIBALD MEMORIAL TROPHY
The 13 and under girls medley relay is named in memory of John J. Archibald
who lived in Scarsdale and was a longtime member of the Orienta Beach Club.
Until his untimely passing in 1979, he was an ardent supporter and official of
the Westchester County Swimming Association.
DAVID E.
PORTERFIELD MEMORIAL TROPHY
The boys 13 and under 200 yard medley relay is given in memory of David E.
Porterfield who was raised in Larchmont and graduated from Mamaroneck High
School in 1964. Upon graduation he joined the Naval Reserve and volunteered for
Fleet Marine service in Vietnam. David was mortally wounded in Operation
Hastings and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Dave
loved all sports. He swam for Larchmont Yacht and set many records. He loved the
competition and action of the Counties.
PIERCE J.
RYAN MEMORIAL TROPHY
In recognition of the longtime service of our former secretary, Pierce J.
Ryan, of Larchmont, this trophy is awarded annually to the girls 10 & under
Medley Relay champions. His interest in the Association continued long after his
three children completed their swimming careers at Larchmont Shore Club. Pierce
was known for his cheerful personality while a fixture as Custodian of the gate
behind the starting blocks and for his reminder that "the gun is up".
PETER S. WEST
MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy is awarded to the winners of the Boys 10 & under Medley Relay. Mr.
West was a long time volunteer with the Association and served as its vice
president for a number of years, even after his sons had completed their
competitive swimming careers at the Scarsdale Golf Club.
WILLIS
COOLING MEMORIAL TROPHY
This memorial trophy is awarded to the winners of the girls 17 and under 200
yard freestyle relay. Willis Cooling was one of the great swimming coaches of
our time. An accepted authority and leader in the sport, his life's work was
teaching swimming. He coached at Orienta Beach Club for many summers, while in
the winter he made his home in Florida also teaching swimming. He contributed
generously of his time and wisdom in helping the Association. He died suddenly
in 1944 of a heart attack.
KEVIN CULLEN
MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy is given to the winners of the 17 and under boys 200 freestyle
relay i n memory of the late Kevin Cullen, who for many years swam for the
Larchmont Shore Club. His untimely death occurred while he was a freshman
student at Michigan University in the fall of 1975.
GERRY
O'CONNOR MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy is awarded to the winning relay team in the Girls 10 & under 200
yard Freestyle Relay. Gerry realized a need for starting blocks while watching
his oldest daughter swim at the Championships at Playland in the early 1970s. In
1972, he took it upon himself to build the blocks that were used for 24 years in
the swimming portion of this meet.
BARBARA
CUNNINGHAM LEICHTWEISS MEMORIAL TROPHY
This trophy is awarded in recognition of the life of Barbara Cunningham
Leichtweiss to the winners of the Boys 10 & under Freestyle Relays. As a youth,
Barbara was an outstanding swimmer at Harbor Island and as an adult, was the
very successful coach of the Rye Y, the White Plains Middies and for many years
at the Rye Golf Club. Barbara's death in March 1997 was a loss felt by the
entire Westchester County swimming community.
STAN CASSIDY
MEMORIAL TROPHIES
This trophy is awarded to the winning Girls 17 and under medley relay team
in honor of our former Vice President, Stan Cassidy, of Eastchester who was
a dedicated official and officer of the Westchester County Swimming Association
for over twenty years. Stan passed away in the summer of 1980.
JACK AND PAT
GEOGHEGAN TROPHY
The winning team of the Boys 17 and under medley relay will receive this
award which is named for Jack Geoghegan, past president for 15 years of the
WCSA, and his wife Pat. Both Jack and Pat devoted each summer to the smooth
running of the counties for over 20 years and are still frequently seen helping
out during the event.
EDWARD &
REGINA RILEY TROPHY
Awarded to the winners of the Girls 13 and under 200 yd freestyle
relay. This trophy is given in recognition of the long and outstanding service
rendered to The Championships by the Riley family. Ed served as President of the
Association and as Meet Director for over thirty years with "Reg" and their six
children assisting in all administrative roles over the period.
JOHN GLOVER
MEMORIAL TROPHY
The winner of the Boys 13 and under 200 yard freestyle relay is the
recipient of the
John Glover Memorial Award. John Glover was an all American swimmer for
Dartmouth. He met an untimely death while training for the Olympics at Yale. A
resident of Larchmont, he swam for Mamaroneck High School and the Larchmont
Shore Club where he set many county records.
SPECIAL AWARDS
W.C.S.A.
PRESIDENT'S AWARD
The President's Award is given to those individuals who have continuously
donated their time and effort towards making the County Championships a success.
The W.C.S.A. Executive Committee will select individuals on the merit of their
contributions to the event. The award will be presented when an individual has
demonstrated a significant contribution.
